Gas Mileage 2002 Ford Explorer Resource in Questions
Is there an effective way to refit or convert a 2002 Ford Explorer for better mileage & lower gas consumption? I have a 2002 Ford Explorer & a 1986 Mustang. They get about the same, pitiful mileage of about 14mpg. I can't afford a new car/hybrid. Is there anyway to get better mileage out of either other than the basics...tire inflation, oil & filter replacements, etc. And...unfortunately, a bicycle won't take me where I need to go. Are hydrogen or water conversion kits really effective & would either work for me? Thanks for any suggestions.

svenlacrosse replied: "no, you would have to redo the whole car. new tranny, gearing. It wouldn't be cost effective. All you can do it dont drive fast and keep the car running good."

Rachel W replied: "It is a lot of money to replace all the parts you would need to in order to convert either of your vehicles. Which is not very cost effective, if you're going to spend that much converting, you would be better off buying a cheap little rust-bucket just to get you around with high MPG's for a couple hundred bucks! Another thing you can do is maximize your current MPG's"

gearbox replied: "14 in a 2002 Explorer? Must be a lot of city driving. Step one would be a new fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug change if not done within last 30,000 miles or so and oil in last 5,000 miles as most neglect this and eats the fuel mileage hard. make sure air pressure is at 35psi and be easy on the gas is about the only real proven fuel economy answers. The water conversions still have the jury out on them.. some swear by them, some say it doesn't work as claimed for the money spent to buy and install the system (as the water has to be metered just so or you can explode a engine) And what I read is from certified techs... not the people selling these systems on the side"

what performance upgrades can i put in my 2002 ford explorer to increase gas mileage and power? i have a 2002 ford explorer limited edition v8 and i want to make it a bit more powerful and i have been thinking about putting a k&n cold air intake to improve the gas mileage and add some horsepower, are there any other ideas of what to do to make it faster or more fuel efficient? thanks

Omar replied: "You can install and exhaust and air intake. Should get you almost 40 more gallon per tank."

2002 ford explorer v6 Poor gas mileage? I'm getting real poor gas mileage on my explorer. the air filter, spark plugs, and oil are all new and also the fuel filter. Tires are pumped up. i don't have a lead foot. What are some other things that can make it get crappy gas mileage?

SVOMAN replied: "try a better grade of gas..also let off the gas sooner coming to a light or stop sign.."

fodaddy19 replied: "What mileage are you getting exactly? More Information is needed."

Josh S replied: "A bad sensor or vacuum leak, I start listen for a vacuum leak, most common issue with an 02"

What do you think about your Ford Explorer? We're thinking about buying a 2002 Ford Explorer (V6) and we're wondering if it's a good vehicle. Are they dependable? What's the gas mileage? Things like that. We've read about them online and in Consumer Reports. We would like to hear from personal experience. Thanks!

Mopar Muscle Gal replied: "The Ford Exploder? Thats the nickname .. Ford employees give it They are top heavy and roll giving poor gas mileage"

amos replied: "never buy a gas guzzling, earth killing suv. i mean, do you really offroad? i thought so. just buy an electric car"

aplatero1984 replied: "I want to go ahead and apologize a head of time but...........ITS A FORD."

GDBear replied: "I have a '96 Explorer Limited. It's a little hard on gas, but otherwise it is a good vehicle - very reliable. Repairs have been a bit costly, but it's to be expected with a vehicle like this."

Christian replied: "Hey when buying a vehicle you should be comfortable with it, and shouldn't have to ask online for other people's opinion. But i personally like the explorer (the whole explorer are no good they roll and that stuff is not a problem. that happened one year and it was because of tire. like i said not an issue anymore) i got one and i get about 20 miles to a gallon."

Michael replied: "i have had 3 explorers and currently own an '03 and '05... run great, very safe.... yes some people have problems with them but i drive mine pretty hard and one reached 200k+ miles while the others are still under 100k with few, minor, expected repairs... it has been the best selling suvs in america many years so let millions of drivers be your source"

boo_1313 replied: "lol wow some people say alot of bad stuff about them but there the underdogs i have a 1992 eddy bourer explorer 4 liter i have 298,000 km on it and thats alot and i have had not problems and they are so not top heavy im i chick and i bag the crap out of her. lol and i still got ALOT of power and mine have sweet gas mileage dont listen to thoughs other poeple there full of shit lol. VERY DEPENDABLE. i have a son and i can take him though anything and there because i trust that it wont break down and there easy to fix and cheap."

Better Gas Mileage in SUV? I have a 2002 ford explorer v8...what are some things i can do to save gas? any suggestions?

racerwesu replied: "use the cruise control, change the air filter to a K&N, add a Helix device for starters"

morgy replied: "try putting more air into the tyres, they could probably go up by 5lbs,remove access weight from the vehicle(throw the wife and kids out)"

cdr_22689 replied: "a few tips for any year or model of vehicle is make sure you keep your speed at one spot unless the limit changes. it will use more gas if you keep speeding up and slowing down. when you stop at a light or stop sign, dont take off fast, take off easy and it will aslo save you gas. Keep your tires aligned and air pressure right. Do not run any lights unless needed dont carry heavy items unless needed. if possible use the "over drive" gear it actually is the most efficient gear you have. in either automatic or manual. if you know your going to be sitting for a few minutes then go ahead and turn it off, roll down the window instead of leaving it running with the a/c on. I hope i helped!"

desjr1967 replied: "Change you air filter at least every three months. I change mine in my 07f-150 every two months. Better air flow will help. One thing alot of people don't think about. If you travel the interstate alot, or travler say 55 mph for long periods of time, use you air condition instead of rolling your window down. With the windows up, you have less wind drag. The wind rushing inside the car car create a powerful wind drag."

What one thing could I do to maximize the fuel efficiency of my SUV? I drive a 2002 Ford Explorer and it has a 4.0 V6 engine. Is there something that I could do that would really make a difference in the gas mileage?

Tim replied: "Just the basic stuff-keep the air in your tires full, change the oil and the filter regularly, don't haul around a bunch of stuff in the car, and don't drive with the windows down (drag). You can also try coasting up to red lights, so you don't really "stop", you just slow down. Oh, and if you are driving in the hills, you can always shift to neutral and coast for awhile...just be careful if you do the last two things listed."

Harry replied: "Other than keeping it in good mechanical repair, the biggest influence on mileage is your driving style. Don't perform jackrabbit starts and stops. A good analogy is to drive as if there were an egg under the gas and brake pedals, and use them as if you were trying to avoid breaking the 'egg'. Other than that, there's not much you can do. Be wary of 'silver bullets', that is, products that claim a significant increase in fuel economy. If they really were that effective, they would be incorporated into vehicles from the factory. Most of them are gimmicks that do not work. If fuel economy is a really pressing issue for you, consider trading in your Explorer for something that gets better EPA fuel mileage ratings."

tnh2 replied: "turn off the A/C"

Ryan M replied: "Without spending a grip of cash or trading to something like an Escape hybrid or Chevy Tahoe two-mode, you'll have to stick with what other people have suggested. You can't really cheat physics. But you could try a more powerful fuel, like Hydrogen, which is about 3 times more powerful than gasoline. Converting a gas engine to run on Hydrogen has been done. Go to Youtube and search for Stanley Meyer."

SVOMAN replied: "idle time kills your mileage, so drive slow and anticipate traffic lights.."

yugie29 replied: "Yeah, park it in the driveway and drive the hybrid to work, or open your own oil company."

144289 replied: "Take all the junk out, if you have any, drive slower, faster you drive the more times you brake and pick up speed, which is 1 big gas consumption"

Car decisions, between 5 different ones...? Ok, here's the choices, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Saturn Outlook, Kia Rondo, and the Chevrolet Equinox. We want something with good gas mileage and room. It need's at least 5 seats and AWD. We need a good size 2nd row. Right now we have a 2001 or 2002 (I can't remember) Ford Explorer so it shouldn't be hard to top. This would be my dad's car so nothing super girly. If you could list the pros and cons of each or at least give me your opinion that would really help. Thanks. I am sick of cars that don't understand that teenagers have legs and if they are going to sit in the back than they should get just as much room as up front.

Kamil7 replied: "i think you should get the toyota highlander. i has good gas miles and it is dependable. all you need to do is change the oil. it won't ask for anything else. toyotas are built to last. i have one too."

eaglefox200 replied: "Take a look at the new 2007 Ford Edge. It meets all of your requirements. (AWD, good mpg, bold new styling, roomy) Of your list: 1. Honda Pilot: well rated, but gets same mpg as your Explorer. Maybe 1mpg better =/ 2. Saturn Outlook: the new design looks good 3. Chevrolet Equinox: good mpg, but small on space 4. Toyota Highlander: good mpg, small, basically a Camry that sits higher. 5. Kia Rondo: other than a good looking price, I wouldn't buy a Kia. You'll lose big time on depreciation."

gotta love fast willie #39 replied: "Try a Jeep Compass or the Jeep Patriot. The Hyundai Tucson or Hyundai Santa Fe. They are all dependable have good fuel mileage and have a lot of room. Santa Fe has a lot of room. (Been in one before and its comfortable)"

jetsboi92 replied: "I would go with the Kia Rondo. For $20,195, you get a 2.7L V6 with 182hp and a 5 speed automatic transmission. The V6 Rondo gets 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway. The Rondo is also has a wheelbase of 106.3 inches which is pretty big. Standard equipment includes Cruise control on steering wheel and AM/FM/CD/Cassette player. The best options are AM/FM and a 6 CD changer and a third row. This comes to $23,495 which is pretty good. Your dad should get this car. It is perfect for him!!"

SAP replied: "I just leased the 07 Outlook and I love it! We looked at all those vehicles and more, the outlook had all the right options for the price. It has plenty of room without being to big and is very comfortable. I would go with the outlook definitly!"

What do you guys think about Kias? Im currently driving a 2000 ford explorer with over 110000 miles on it. I was looking to trade it in for something with better gas mileage and hopfully around half the miles. I found a 2002 Kia Rio with 57000 miles. I was wondering your experience with Kias...I have never known anyone to own one and so I need some advice. Thank you

speedracertdi replied: "That's a fag car. Seriously, you're going from a truck to a car that you have to wind up to get it to go? The new Kias are pretty good, 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. If you said Kia Sedona I could understand but a Rio????"

fordman replied: "Just some info, you can buy what you want. In the US = 53% of cars sold are American made. In Korea = 98% of cars sold in Korea are made in Korea They are protecting their market, and trying to take ours too. Help the American economy, and buy American. Kia's also have low resale value. good luck either way, just wanted you to know the story."

Gemma replied: "I think they're crap. A coworker's timing belt broke 23 miles after the warranty ran out - Kia didn't offer anything to help cover the cost."

louie g replied: "I was a parts man in a kia dealership and even with their factory warranty they are probably the worst vehicles I've ever seen. To get factory parts is a pain and crazy expensive. If your choice is to buy a kia or ride the bus take the bus it's faster and cheaper."

david g(24 RULES !!!!!) replied: "Buy American !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Looking to buy a used SUV 2006-2008 just wanting opinions on them I need 3rd row. Have 2 kids 11 & 9 & travel? I need help on reliability, gas, stylish, how it drives, anything that can help!! I've had a 2002 Explorer w/ 3rd row really liked it had 160k on it and transmission went out had to replace and the resale value was horrible. i now have a 2005 Altima had it for several years now went back to a car because my ex-husband had a Chevy HD2500 4-dr and so I went back to a car for gas mileage but now we are divorced and I need something with more ROOM!! My car doesn't have enough room for growing boys plus spend the night company. I like my Nissan it doesn't have the smoothest ride it shakes and i have had it checked several times they say eveything is fine but i have read reviews on 2006 Pathfinders on shaking so if anyone can help on answering that. Because I don't want the same problem again. I love the body style of the 2007 Tahoe's but I'm needing to stay at a price range of about $17,000 or less if possible. Plus I'm not a mini-van mom at all I look real young for my age people often think my 11 year old is my brother. Anyway my biggest thing is reliability, smooth ride, 3rd row a must, room, I need to be able to pull ATV's behind on a trailer, DVD optional (can add) and something that can last me for at least the next 3 years... But i'm wanting COMPARISON and OPINIONS on Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Tahoe's, Toyota 4Runner, maybe a Ford not sure if i want to go back to one!!! But anything on any of these or anything similar would really help thanks!!

Robert B replied: "why dont you wanna go back to ford? 160k is REALLY good for a trans.i can guarantee you you will not get better on ANY of the suvs you mentioned.ford is the best in the industry."

PETER GRIFFIN replied: "Honda Pilot has 3 row seating and can tow a trailer. Plus it gets 25MPG (hwy) and will be reliable for over 300k miles. Can't say that about Chevys and Fords."

*SaRaH* replied: "The Mazda CX-9 is great and they last up to 200k or longer when well maintained!"

Can't decide between two cars. Both are Mazda's? I went car shopping and ran into two Mazda's that I really liked. The first one is a 2002 Mazda Tribute DX (manual) with about 95,000 miles on it. I saw the Carfax and wow, it was the most impressive Carfax history I've ever seen. The DX was only owned by 1 previous owner who changed the oil every 3,000 miles (sometimes even less) and was very good at maintaining the brakes, lights, and suspension regularly. It is manual so it gets about 20-22 mpg on the road/ 25 on the freeway. This car is listed for about $5900. The second Mazda is a 2003 Protege (automatic) with 77,000 miles. I saw the Carfax and it wasn't as detailed as the Tribute. It only had listings of passing emissions inspection and when it got sold to the other owners (no listings on oil changes, brakes, etc). This car does get around 30 mpg on the road and the price is $4,500. To give a background on my situation. I am 19 years old and attending a community college about 10 minutes from my house and my job is about 15 minutes. So I don't have to commute very far everyday. I did like both cars very much. The Protege does have less miles, has better gas mileage, and cheaper than the Tribute. But the Tribute had an amazing Carfax report that had every detail of maintenance and only 1 previous owner (unlike the Protege which had 3). Also, I've been driving my mom's 03 Ford Explorer since I was 16 so I am used to the SUV feel. So all in all, I can't decide. Both are great cars. If anyone can provide me with their personal opinion or advice that would be great! Sorry for the really long explanation but this will be my first car so I need all the help I can get! Thanks :)

pickmefirstplz replied: "i would have the Tribute checked out by a mechanic and if its good i would buy that"

Mason replied: "I would go with the tribute because; 1. the tribute looks to be in better condition, even though it has more miles. 2. much more versatile both look great really and both would be good purchases though"
