About Lexus Dead Battery in Questions
Is it possible to replace the battery in 2006 Lexus GS key without going to the dealer? 2006 Lexus GS AWD model. The battery is dead and I want to know if I can replace the battery myself because the dealer is charging way too much. Any ideas? By battery I mean the battery that resides inside the KEY to used to open the car doors and start the vehicle. How do I open it?

jumbobret replied: "Radio Shack sells them."

A P replied: "Try a watch repair place or a jewelry store that also sells watches, they usually carry the same type of batteries."

DILLIGAF replied: "Yes it is possible."

onehello67 replied: "yes. you can take the sample battery inside the key and bring it to walmart watch section. check the voltage and get the new battery. would cost about $5.00.you would need a tiny screwdriver to open the key"

My Lexus RX300 would not start. The battery is NOT dead. The jumpstart doesn't work. What is wrong? I have a 1999 Lexus RX300. I bought it used and I have been driving this for about 2 years now. A few months ago, it would not start when I turn the key on and would take a few key turns (turn the key off and on multiple times) and only then the car would start. This happened for some months. Now, the car doesn't start at all. Some think that it could be the alternator, some think it could be spark plug and some think it could be carburetor.... Does any one know or had similar experience? Thank you and appreciate your help!!

Lucefir replied: "You drive a lexus... Take it to a mechanic.."

Bobbi replied: "Could be the starter, alternator or regulator."

Mitraj L replied: "what kind of sound is it making? is it making a clicking sound or no sound at all, i think that it might be the sparkplug my self but its hard to determine without actually being there. You best bet, would be to call the lexus dealer, or any other service company get them to tow it and determine the problem."

alan g replied: "STARTER RELAY IS BAD! MAYBE? ITS MOST LIKLEY A ALARM PROBLEM TRY UNLOCKING AND LOCKING AND UNLOCKING THE DRIVER DOOR AND THEN TRY STARTING IT. ALL LEXUS KEYS HAVE A CHIP IN THEM ON THE END OF THE KEY AND IF YOUR USING LIKE A SPARE KEY THATS ALL METAL ITS NOT GONA WORK. GET A NEW KEY CUT BY THE DEALER"

ramarro smith shadow replied: "It sounds to me like a computer ignition problem, which means take it to a shop where it can be plugged in and diagnosed."

jimricer42 replied: "It is your starter. If the sound when you try to start the car is a single click, it is the starter. They are bad about those going bad."

Thomas E replied: "Well we can rule out carburetor - because it doesn't have one (or any). If it doesn't respond to jump-start i think other answerers have fairly covered Starter and relay. If battery is up - its not the alternator. I don't yet see mentioned IGNITION SWITCH. Sometimes the start contacts in the ignition switch burn out. This might explain why multiple turns of the switch sometimes worked. You need an electrical tech to troubleshoot it top to bottom. Its most likely the switch or the relay. Or on a 10 yr old veh the starter brushes could be worn down to nothing. In that case need rebuilt starter."

amanda g replied: "This happened to me a few months ago with mine it was a computer problem. Cost about $3000 to get it fixed good luck."

Michael T replied: "It could be due to faulty fuel pump cable. Maybe not securely connected or need replacement."

paul m replied: "you have a bad starter motor does the car turn over"

2nd Part 2 my dead battery question!!!? Ok everyone, I just got in the car (97 Lexus ES300) and I turned off the radio and headlights and the damn car came on! Can this still be the battery? I already got a starter about two years ago. Can I drive home without it stalling (I live about 30 minutes away) or should I still have my co-worker give me a jump??? Thanks for all your help :)

STS1SS replied: "If the car has a voltmeter look at it when the key is off. It should read about 11.5~12.5. Now it could vary a bit from that, but it should be close. If it is lower. If you have a voltage GUAGE you can tell a lot from this when the car is running. it should read about 14 volts while running. If it reads less the battery is discharging. If it reads more the battery is charging. This can help because if you get a jump and it starts you would expect more than 14 volts, less means the generator or connections are not working. If you get the battery charged but when the car runs the volts are less this is bad because the battery should not be discharging, there is probably an issue with your generator."

devilinme replied: "hmm. it's the battery. depends. some cars won't run on dead batteries. here's a test you can do... start the engine, remove the battery if it still runs w/o the battery then you're good to go"

john r replied: "Your problem is in your ingition switch. Have the car towed to a lexus dealer, and tell them the problem, and they will replace the ingition switch. Your problem is not the battery, or the charging system, its the switch. DON'T JUMP THAT CAR the battery could explod, and will have all that battery acid all over the engune, and now your are in for a jumbo bill. TOW IT."

Battery dead? My dad and I went to start up our Lexus Convertible this morning and it didn't start. is what it is. Anyways, we tried jump starting it and it wouldn't start. The thought came across about maybe it being out of gas, but since we can't get it to start, we can not open the gas tank lid. Any ideas as to what the problem is or even how to get the lid open? Thank you.

michael_oxgood replied: "pull on the gas tank lid. if that doesn't open it, try pushing the button inside the car that has a picture of a gas pump on it. if that doesn't work, kick your father's butt for buying a lexus in the first place."

Ironball replied: "There should be an emergncy pull in the trunk."

Russ replied: "test the voltage at the battery, you should have 11 to 13 volts, if the voltage is much lower than that recharge the batter and take the car in to have the problem corrected. if the battery voltage is fine than you have an open circuit, check the negative connections and the fuses"

dodge man replied: "there's a button inside of the car that opens it and also in the trunk there's an emergency relief cable off to the side that will also open it,either one will get it open, but if you have any power in the battery at all it will open it from the switch, good luck with it,hope this helps."

Pedro S replied: "you dont know if its out of gas? never heard of a car that had to run to open the gas tank....you guys sound out of it...better call a pro."

My car has a problem with the battery where it drains new batterys. help.? My '99 Lexus ES 300 drains batteries over night, I went and got a new battery and it wont start. The only way it starts is if I jump start it. It runs fine when I start it, but when I turn it off, the battery is dead again. Why? and what should I do?

Tom F replied: "It sounds as if the alternator is not working properly. It could be the alternator belt is either EXTREMELY loose, or not even there anymore. But if that is still there, and tight, it is very likely the alternator that needs replacement. You can usually take the vehicle to any Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, and sometimes other car parts supplier chains, and they will diagnose the problem for free. It would be advisable to call first, as I have run across where the machine they usually roll outside to a car to check your charging system, sometimes has stopped working, and you then you would need to get it checked somewhere else. I hope this helps. --Tom."

How do you reset the anti theft device on a ES300 lexus..? My wifes car wont turn over, no clicking, just silence.. we had the battery changed last week and now I think the anit theft device has to be reset.. her keyless remote battery is dead so how do we reset this..

CHOPPER BOB replied: "try the key in the door lock lock and unlock and try to start it"

How do you fix a lexus 470 when the remote still works but the car doesn't seem to be picking up the signal? The batteries in the remote aren't dead, but it won't operate the car. The doorlocks and alarm still work but only from the inside or manually with the key.

miked452001 replied: "You better fix it quick so some black person doesn't come along and steal it since you think blacks like to steal."

Mikey C replied: "Is it a GX or a LX? Can u start it with the key? I would suggest taking it to a dealer, and being really specific, or show them what it does. Remember techs and service advisors are not mind readers, u need to show exactly what is wrong or give a good idea."

pk9394racing replied: "the dealer will fix it"

Lexus ES300 Starter or Alternator? Hello. I have a 1995 Lexus ES300 that has been having problems starting up. I don't believe its the battery as I replaced it several months ago, but I'm coming back to either starter or alternator. The car has problems starting in the mornings especially, when I have not driven it for some time. It's been doing this for several weeks, and I think its finally bit the big one. When trying to start, the car clicks and then nothing.Almost similar to a dead battery. There is no additional noises, or whining like i'd expect from a bad starter. . It's been doing this for a while now, but always started up after 30-45 seconds. Today I get nothing. Please let me know of any thoughts you may have. Sincerely, JAM

formely henrysol replied: "you need to first know how well your starting/charging system is. I would first check to see if I have good amount of power at the starter itself, since if the connections to the starter are loose corroded or dirty connections make it difficult for the starter to do its work... so if that's good its most likely the starter. now when you replaced the battery was there a change on how it started or was it the same? if sounded different maybe your alternator is not working to its full potential in which you go to the battery and with the vehicle running check for about 14.5 volts then turn on all accesories and check to make sure its putting out at least 14 volts. That test isn't 100 percent reliable since you really need to test for the amperage it puts out but it will get you started..."
