What do you guys know and think about the Bombardier/Aprilla/Rotax engine in the BMW f800gs? I would like to know about the quality, durability, cost of owning, etc. Thank you.

JetDoc replied: "Buy a Suzuki V-Strom 650 instead. Every bit as good as the mini-Beemer, and quite a bit less money."

Why Doesnt Harley Davidson Build More Bikes with Rotax Engines? Harley built Army 500cc Thumpers with the reliable non oil leaking engine. Seems there would be a demand. Just like Eric Buell understood people would buy a USA made sport bike. BMW has a Rotax 650cc that gets 70 miles per gallon. Dear Mr FireCracker. I Never tried to run a Rotax or Honda for that matter below zero degrees. Studded tires are illegal in Michigan. Nice to hear from a Harley guy whose bike doesnt leak oil, But I may add,,,at below zero the oil would be like jello.

camel jockey shifter replied: "because thier engines are fine just as they are,if it aint broke, dont fix it."

vamedic4 replied: "HD has a problem. It's called "technology". It's taken them 50 plus years to develop a "new" engine, and even though they are "nice" bikes, they suffer from a lack of technology (save for the most recent years). Eric Buell is amazing in his vision and his ability to put a slightly different motorcycle out there for us to enjoy, but HD seems not to pay much attention to anything outside their own front door. And there'd be more of a demand if the bikes didn't cost so much. Why buy a HD cruiser when I can get a Honda or Kawi for 11 grand less and have the piece of mind knowing I'll do more RIDING and less WAITING for it to be repaired?"

Scooter replied: "Because the bike would not sell. Harley makes the bikes they make, because their costumers want it that way. I've owned three Harley's, the one I own now is a 1996. I like the style of the bike and the feel of the bike. I'm not sure I like the new 2009 bikes. I used to own a 1967 Camaro, well I don't like the new Camaros and will not buy one. I would not by a Harley with a rotax motor in it. If Harley did what everybody else was doing, they would not be Harley any more. They would be just anouther motorcycle company. The Harley bashers, will tell you that Harley tech is behind the times. Most of them, don't know what a crankshaft is, or what it does. So they dam sure don't know what, kind of tech Harley is using."

party.chief replied: "The Army Thumper is a unique motorcycle and it's design has always been kept secret because of it's military obligations. Harley has no desire to profit from giving away even a slight piece of it's technology. After all, they are an American company."

The Freak Show replied: "Buell has several new bikes in the works, and a dirtbike project that keeps getting shelved for one reason or another. There is also rumours of the VRod engine going into the top-or-the-line touring bikes. Buell is right on the edge of really making an impact on the sporting world. I hope they continue this trend. I would love to see that XR1200 stuffed with that new 146HP 1125R engine. I would probably put that right up at the top of my list of machines I would love to have in my garage. With HD hiring a lot of new management, I wouldn't be surprised to see some big changes. I hope they do well. I totally believe that American kids would prefer American sport bikes if they were the equal of anything from Japan."

Firecracker . replied: "You might as well ask why Chrysler doesn't build more cars with Chevy engines. Does your bike run at 8 degrees below zero Farenheit? Mine does, and hasn't leaked a drop."
